Foods to Avoid When You Have a Cough and Cold

Dealing with a cough and cold can be quite bothersome. Along with medication and rest, diet plays a crucial role in aiding your recovery. While certain foods can help alleviate cough and cold symptoms, others can exacerbate your condition. In this blog, we will explore the foods you should avoid when you have a cough and cold, as they may hinder your healing process.

Foods to avoid during a cough and cold

Dairy products:

Dairy products like milk, cheese, etc., can worsen your cough and cold. They are known to increase mucus production, which can thereby increase the cough and cold. Hence, limiting the intake of dairy products whenever you suffer from a cold and cough can help in the recovery.

Sugar and processed foods:

Foods rich in refined sugars and processed foods should be avoided when you are suffering from a cold and cough. These foods can weaken your immunity and hence delay the healing process.

Fried foods:

Fried and fatty food items are among the foods that you should avoid when you have a cough and cold. It is because these foods cause inflammation in the body which can increase nasal and sinus congestion, itching and irritation in the throat and cough.

Spicy foods:

Spicy foods can cause irritation in the throat and worsen your cough. These foods can also increase the nasal discharge and can cause a runny nose. Hence, it is good to avoid consuming these foods when you have a cough and cold.

Caffeine and caffeinated beverages:

Caffeine and caffeinated beverages like coffee can make you dehydrated, which can make your throat and nasal passages dry. Dry throat and nasal passages can cause itching and irritation, which thereby worsens the cough and cold.

So, next time you have a cough and cold, avoid or limit these foods to help faster recovery.
